Is titanium a new lightweight material?

2024-08-19

Titanium is a new type of lightweight material. Titanium alloy has only been developed for 60 to 70 years. In 1954, titanium alloy materials were developed by American companies. First, let's introduce industrial pure titanium. According to the impurity content and mechanical properties, it can be divided into three grades: TA1, TA2, and TA3. The larger the grade number, the greater the impurity content, the greater the strength of titanium, but its plasticity will decrease. Industrial pure titanium is a commonly used a titanium alloy in aviation, shipbuilding, chemistry, etc. It is mainly used for some parts with low working strength requirements below 350 degrees. If you want to get some materials with better performance, you need to add an appropriate amount of alloying elements to industrial pure titanium, which is titanium alloy. The strength, plasticity, and oxidation resistance of titanium alloys will be significantly improved. Titanium alloys can be divided into three categories according to heat treatment organization: a titanium alloy, b titanium alloy, and a+b titanium alloy. a titanium alloy has stable organization and good welding performance. It is the main component of heat-resistant titanium alloys, but its room temperature strength is low and its plasticity is not high enough. a+b titanium alloy is strengthened by heat treatment, and has high strength at room temperature and good heat resistance at medium temperature, but its structure is unstable and has good welding performance. b titanium alloy has good shaping and processing performance, which is a basis for the development of high-strength titanium alloy. In fact, the main metal titanium that makes up the material of titanium alloy is not rare. The content of titanium on the earth accounts for 0.45% of the total amount of the earth's crust, second only to metal elements such as magnesium, aluminum and iron. However, due to the harshness of titanium alloy to the metallurgical environment, the current price of titanium alloy is relatively high.

Secondly, as a young and light metal, titanium alloy has its own special properties. Among all metals, titanium has the highest weight-to-strength ratio, and its weight is 44% lighter than steel, but its mechanical strength is similar to that of steel and three times stronger than aluminum. Titanium alloy has extremely strong corrosion resistance and can be used in corrosive environments such as strong acids and alkalis, and has good oxidation resistance. It can withstand high-temperature oxidation, is not easy to rust, and can be used in high-temperature environments. Titanium alloy has high tensile strength, and its strength and hardness are higher than ordinary stainless steel. Similar to aluminum, titanium is also covered with a dense itchy film at room temperature. Its non-toxic and non-magnetic characteristics are also very suitable for industrial production. Titanium is the most compatible metal with the human body and is also used in the medical field, such as heart stents, orthopedic titanium plates, etc.

Now titanium alloys are also widely used in aerospace, construction, electronics, chemicals, marine engineering, daily consumer goods, etc.
